Kiama
This charming town of Kiama is situated on the eastern coast of Australia, just an hour and a half south of Sydney, and when you visit you will experience the relaxing wonders of the country’s eastern shoreline. A lovely town where hustle and bustle just dont happen.
The name Kiama was given by the native aborigines and it means where the sea makes a noise. The name came from the Kiama Blowhole, a popular tourist attraction that makes an enormously loud sound when it whooshes.
The Blowhole has a “little brother” in the Little Blowhole too. It’s located just above the Blowhole so you can get a birds eye view of the force of the water. It’s almost unbelievable when you see (and hear!) the Blowhole shoot water up more than two stories into the air. Watching it you can be tempted to try to get closer but dont – the force can pull you into the plume which would have a somewhat deadly effect.
There is a gorgeous harbor where you’ll be able to rent a boat and go fishing for numerous types of fish like yellow fin tuna, marlin, and snapper. Kiama is, in fact, a harbor hamlet with thick trees and hills that surround the quaint downtown area.
The Pilots Cottage Museum has a wonderful history of the town and surrounding area.
The Minnamurra Rain Forest is in the Budderoo National Park and is an excellent representation of the beauty that rain forests have to provide.
If you are feeling like a challenge you’ll be able to hike to the Saddleback Mountain Lookout and see the scenery spread before you.
The Minnamurra River offers the chance to drift in a canoe, or you can have lunch on the shore, or swim there. Look for the cute and “cuddly” koalas that live in the trees here. Also, there is a species of pelican that is only found here.
The first settler started the diary industry and established the first dairy factory in the area. But there was not just milk that brought in trade and profit as they started quarrying basalt or blue stone as it is frequently called. This enterprise has lasted down through the years and continues to be being carried out nowadays. Being only an hour along with a half away from Sydney, this can be a great day commute for them.
South Coast Beaches
Like most coastal towns, Kiama boasts some great beaches and a beautiful and varied coastline. There’s the famous Seven Mile Beach. But actually there are seven beaches in the Kiama region. A few are surf beaches and are enjoyed by avid followers of the sport. Some beaches are for strolling and enjoying the sound of surf as you walk along. But there’s such a lot to see and do that you will most likely want a longer south coast beach holiday to encounter all that Kiama has to offer.
